With 2011 being the year that ‘happiness’ really made its mark in the UK – with last weeks launch of the government backed ‘Action For Happiness’ telling us that a happy nation is a much more motivated and productive one - local positive mental health charity Feel Good UK is set to follow this lead with the rollout of its own National Lottery funded play, which is set to tour around Portsmouth community settings later this year.
Telling the story of a day in the life of two opposing characters - Paul Feelgood and Peter Feelbad – the 30 minute play depicts how Paul manages to successfully manage and contain his stress levels by apply a number of drug free mind management techniques which the charity teaches, while Peter’s knee-jerk negative reaction to events causes his stress and distress levels to rise.
Called ‘You Can Choose Your Mood’, the original interactive play asks the audience to question their knee-jerk reactions to the world and begin to manage their thoughts and ultimately their behaviour based upon how they feel. The plays philosophy is based on the powerful teachings of the US based motivational speaker Esther Hicks, whose books are available in the self-help section of any UK bookstore. The entire Feel Good UK charity philosophy is based on these teachings, which have helped the charity make dramatic improvements in many people’s lives by getting them to understand and acknowledge their thoughts and feelings.
In preparation for the rollout of the play, the charity is seeking volunteer acting talent from the local community to play the key character roles in the play, as well as volunteer stage crew to help change the set and prepare the sound equipment. At launch all positions will be voluntary, but once positive feedback on the impact of the play has been secured, the charity will be looking to secure grant funding to pay all talent roles to carry the plays message to various school and community settings around the UK.
To apply for these positions, applicants should email their acting or crew CV’s to the charity at hello@feelgoodukcharity.com. Those selected from this process will then be invited to an audition where the cast will be selected. Rehearsals will then be held over several weekends to work on the play, before then performing it in local shopping centre’s and other community locations on weekends across the summer months.
The actor’s and crews weekend availability is vital so all applicants must ensure they are available and flexible with their time at weekends during the summer months to seriously be considered for these positions.
The rollout of the play comes at a time when the nation’s mental health seems to be rapidly deteriorating alongside the wilting economy. Data from the National Economics Foundation recently placed the UK in 24th position in the world in terms of life satisfaction, compared to the USA which came 9th, and Costa Rica which came a surprising 1st.
• Over the last 25 years, rates of anxiety and depression amongst young people in the UK have increased by 70%
• The World Health Organisation predicts depression will be the second highest cause of death globally (after heart disease) by 2020
“David Cameron’s attention to happiness is seen by many as woolly and trite. But to really enjoy life and get the maximum out of every moment, an individual truly has to be of a happy mindset. With no mainstream education being in place to teach people how to feel good and be happy, Feel Good UK will be touring ‘You Can Choose Your Mood’ around Portsmouth community locations to make locals aware that happiness truly is an inner job, and that only by choosing thoughts that feel good within themselves can people start to lead much more happier lives, which leads to increased motivation and success.” Feel Good UK CEO Steven Surridge
Feel Good UK is also running a number of day long workshops over the summer months to help individuals improve their mental health and happiness levels.
